All of us want to remain mentally fit to a ripe old age and it is possible to do something about it. The brain can be trained like a muscle.

It doesn’t matter at all whether you try to learn a poem (once again) by heart, play an instrument or immerse yourself in computer programmes. Try to learn something new every day for 30 minutes. All of this helps to maintain mental performance.

Keep moving

All forms of physical activity maintain your mental fitness too. Nordic walking and gymnastic exercises can significantly improve memory capacity already after a six-month time period. Take 10,000 steps a day and you will see that you are fitter.

Stay in contact

Also, keep up your social contacts. A Swedish study has shown that loneliness and lack of contact increase the risks of suffering from dementia by almost 60 percent.

Have a healthy diet

Fruits and vegetables, eggs, nuts and lean meat as well as fish with a lot of omega-3 fatty acids can lower the risk of dementia.
