A good and healthy night’s sleep
The benefits of good and sufficient sleep are obvious. One is well rested in the morning and can tackle the new day with fresh energy. But what can you do when falling sleep is more difficult? And what actually constitutes a good night’s sleep?
How long one should sleep varies from person to person, although this ranges between six and eight hours for most. Younger people tend to sleep more, and older people less. But it is just as important to go to sleep at the right time. It’s best to do this in such a way that the maximum melatonin concentration is reached in the middle of the sleeping period. For most people, this occurs at around three o’clock in the morning.
For many people, this may sound easy, but it isn’t. After all, not everyone falls asleep immediately after going to bed. And this can quickly become frustrating, especially when it takes longer. There is no definitive trick to alleviate this. But there are some things you can keep in mind to fall and stay asleep more quickly and reliably.
In addition to the measures mentioned above, there are other tricks and home remedies that promote healthy and restful sleep. Here are a few of them:
While at first glance this would hardly seem to work, it is actually a sensible sleeping aid. Counting distracts from the thoughts on the mind that can rob one of sleep. It isn’t really about the sheep per se. Merely thinking about monotonous things is often enough.
Who isn’t familiar with this scenario: you’ve only just gone to bed, when you start to go through the things that are on your mind. It’s worth a try to place paper and pen on the bedside table in order to write down these thoughts. That way, you can literally put your problems aside.
Although never scientifically proven, hardly anyone would dispute the real effect of a warm glass of milk with honey. It is presumed that the effect lies more in the calming effect of the ritual than in the individual ingredients.
Another great relaxation exercise is to lie on the back and fully concentrate on breathing in and out. This also banishes any thoughts that keep one from sleeping.
